For decades, coffee has been both celebrated and mocked. It was accused of inducing impotence and insanity, often a cure for laziness or a “gift from heaven.” Strong stuff. But what are the real, scientifically proven advantages and drawbacks of coffee that we know today?
The best-known coffee ingredient is caffeine, the most frequently used psychoactive drug in the world. It has been studied very well for its beneficial effects on the human body, but coffee as a whole is a complicated drink with a thousand different substances. Some reports claim that decaf and caffeinated coffee can have the same health effects and say that much of the health benefits of coffee are not due to caffeine.
1. Coffee increases physical performance
About an hour before class, have a cup of black coffee and your performance will increase by 11-12 percent. Caffeine enhances the blood levels of adrenaline. Adrenaline is the “fight or flight” hormone in
your body that makes you prepare for physical exertion.
2. Coffee will help you lose weight
Coffee includes magnesium and potassium, which allows insulin to be used by the human body, controls blood sugar levels, and reduces the cravings for snacks and sugary treats.
3. Coffee assists you in burning fat
Caffeine encourages fat cells to break down body fat and use it for training as fuel.
4. Coffee helps you stay alert and concentrate
Moderate intake of caffeine, 1-6 cups a day, helps you concentrate and increases your mental alertness.
5. Coffee decreases the likelihood of dying
Studies have shown that the average risk of premature death from coffee drinkers are 25 per cent lower than for those who don’t drink coffee.
6. Coffee minimizes the risk of cancer
One research has shown that coffee can reduce the risk of developing male prostate cancer by 20% and women’s endometrial cancer by 25%.
People drank four cups of coffee a day in the research sample. Caffeine can also prevent the development of the most common form of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma.
7. Coffee decreases stroke risk
The decreased risk of stroke is associated with a reasonable coffee intake (2-4 cups a day).

Studies have shown that drinking coffee frequently reduces the risk of Parkinson’s disease by 25%. There’s evidence that in the portion of
the brain affected by Parkinson’s, caffeine induces activity.
